NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
Sophomore midfielder Carlos Benavides of the Northridge men's soccer team was named the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 25 – Oct. 2, the league office announced Monday. Benavides recorded three of his team-high six assists in the Matadors' 3-0 victory over No. 19 Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night.
Benavides earned his first assist of the match in the 35th minute when his through ball to Christian Gonzalez Diaz was crossed in front of the net. Yarden Azulay was on the receiving end and put the ball away for his third goal of the year.
The second assist came less than five minutes later when Benavides brought the ball into the box and passed to Chris Smith, who found Gonzalez Diaz for the game's second goal.
Benavides tallied his third helper in the 81st minute of play after his touch pass to Yuval Barak was crossed from the left side of the pitch to Edwin Rivas, who powered it into the net from about five yards out to set the final score at 3-0.
On the season, Benavides has six assists for six points, which are tied for fourth on the team. His six assists are good for most in the Big West Conference and he also ranks first in the league with 0.75 assists per game.
Benavides is currently tied for second in the NCAA in assists per game and tied for eighth in the nation in assists. His three-assist performance against the Titans on Saturday is tied for second-most in a game in the NCAA this season.
