NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
The Matador men's soccer program has reason to be proud this offseason as senior midfielder Rafael Garcia has been selected to participate in the 2012 adidas MLS Player Combine, Major League Soccer announced in a press release today. Garcia is one of 52 NCAA Division I athletes invited to the Combine.
The initial player list was determined by a panel of Division I coaches who nominated and voted for players in conjunction with MLS coaches, according to MLS. The initial group of 52 will be joined by Generation adidas players and athletes from NCAA Division II and III schools, NAIA schools, and Division I alternates.
"Rafa is one of the most accomplished players and best decision-makers to ever wear a Cal State Northridge jersey," said head coach Terry Davila. "He will make any team he plays for better."
Garcia, a First Team All-Big West Conference selection in 2011, finished his career at Northridge with six goals, nine assists and 21 points in 68 matches for the Matadors. The Canoga Park, Calif., native is on a list of 19 midfielders competing in the Combine and looking to be drafted in SuperDraft, which will be held on Jan. 12, 2012 at the Kansas City Convention Center.
The 17th annual MLS Player Combine will be held at Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from Jan. 6-10, 2012 and will conclude two days before the 2012 MLS SuperDraft.
Players will compete in a series of matches that will be scouted by coaches and technical staffs from all 19 MLS clubs. All Combine matches are closed to the public.
The SuperDraft will include two rounds and 38 overall selections, with the first round broadcast live on ESPN 2 at 9:00 a.m. PT. A four-round Supplemental Draft will take place via conference call on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012.
