NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
An aggressive non-conference slate that includes six matches away from Matador Soccer Field highlights the 2012 Cal State Northridge Men's Soccer schedule, head coach Terry Davila announced Monday. The Matadors will play 19 matches this fall, including eight at home, as the team looks to improve on its record of 8-8-3 from last season.
Before the regular season gets underway in late August, the Matadors will host the New Mexico Lobos in an exhibition on August 16 under the lights at Matador Field. The Lobos, winners of the MPSF championship in 2011, finished the season with an undefeated record of 18-0-4 and made it to the Sweet 16 of the College Cup before being sent home on penalty kicks.
Northridge opens the season with five games away from the San Fernando Valley as the team heads to Fullerton, Calif. to take part in the Cal State Fullerton Tournament. The Matadors will match up against Portland University on August 24 and American University on August 26 while in Orange County.
From there, the Matadors will head to the east coast to face Georgetown on August 31 and Loyola Maryland on September 2. Northridge has faced the Hoyas once before and has never met the Greyhounds on the soccer pitch.
The final game of the road trip sees Northridge travel to Sin City on September 7 to take on UNLV in a rematch of the Matadors' loss to the Rebels in overtime at the Labor Day Classic last year. In all, the Matadors will travel a total of 6,097 miles before hosting a regular-season match in 2012.
After the match in Las Vegas, the Matadors will welcome the program's alumni for a friendly on September 8 at Matador Soccer Field before returning to competitive action the next week.
Northridge will host Army for the first time in program history on September 14. The Matadors also host Temple (September 16) before a final non-conference road match at the University of San Diego on September 20. The Matadors will play one last tune up match against Air Force in Northridge on September 22 before kicking off Big West play.
The Matadors open the conference schedule with two contests at home against the UC Davis Aggies (September 28) and the Sacramento State Hornets (September 30). The Hornets are new to the conference this season, joining as an associate member in men's soccer.
A central-coast trip sees Northridge taking on Cal Poly (October 5) and UC Santa Barbara (October 7) on a challenging weekend with vital points at stake. The Matadors then host the UC Riverside Highlanders on October 13 before playing three straight on the road at Cal State Fullerton (October 17), UC Irvine (October 20) and UC Riverside (October 27).
The final two matches of the regular season will be played at Matador Soccer Field when the Matadors host Cal State Fullerton on Halloween night before the UC Irvine Anteaters come to town on November 3. The match against the Anteaters will also be Senior Day as the Matadors will honor the program's senior members before their final regular season home match.
The Big West Conference Tournament is scheduled for November 7 and 10 at sites and times to be announced.
