NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
After scoring two goals and adding an assist in the first week of action Cal State Northridge sophomore forward Edwin Rivas was named as the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Rivas scored a goal in both of CSUN's wins and had the game-winning assist in the season opener to win the honor.
"Edwin had a remarkable week and it is great that he is starting to approach his potential," said Northridge head coach Terry Davila. "This is only the first week of the season and we look for him to continue his production throughout the year."
On Friday afternoon at the Wilson Titan Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton, Rivas tallied three points against the Portland Pilots in a 4-0 victory. He sent a cross in to Sagi Lev-Ari for CSUN's first goal in the 22nd minute and scored one of his own in the 34th after a long run up the left side of the field.
On Sunday against American University, Rivas scored the game-tying goal in the 51st minute after Northridge fell behind three minutes earlier. For his work on the pitch, Rivas was named as the Wilson Titan Classic Offensive MVP.
The Los Angeles, Calif. native earned five points during the first two matches of the season, half of his total from the entire 2011 campaign. Rivas was named to the Big West Preseason All-Conference Team in a poll of conference coaches.
