NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
Defender Joe Franco is one of 54 NCAA Division I college seniors invited to participate in the 2013 adidas MLS Player Combine, Major League Soccer announced Tuesday. The combine, which runs from January 11-15 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is a chance for players to impress representatives from the 19 MLS clubs ahead of the 2013 SuperDraft scheduled for January 17 in Indianapolis, Ind.
"It is a huge honor and I am very grateful for this opportunity," said Franco. "I am very blessed to be invited to an event like this."
Franco is one of two invitees from the Big West Conference, joining Machael David of UC Santa Barbara. He follows in the footsteps of former Matador midfielder Rafael Garcia, who participated in the 2012 combine and was taken with the 38th overall pick in the MLS Supplemental Draft last January.
The MLS Combine consists of three match days on January 11, 13 and 15 at Central Broward Regional Park. Participants will be divided into four teams and will play a match against each of the other three teams, one each day.
All participants at the combine are eligible for selection during the two rounds of the MLS SuperDraft. Following the conclusion of the SuperDraft, a four-round Supplemental Draft will be held via conference call on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
Franco was named the Big West Conference Defender of the Year at the end of the regular season and also earned a spot on the All-Big West First Team. In addition, he was named to the NSCAA All-Far West Region Second Team.
In history, Cal State Northridge has had nine players drafted by MLS clubs, five during the SuperDraft. Of the nine selections, six have been taken by the LA Galaxy.
