Edwin Rivas Named Big West Offensive Player of the Week
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
After scoring a goal in back-to-back matches this weekend, Cal State Northridge junior forward Edwin Rivas was named the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Rivas scored the game-winning goal at Sacramento State and added an insurance tally late at UC Davis to help the Matadors win their first two matches of the Big West season.
Rivas, who won the weekly award for the second time in his career, was also named the Offensive Player of the Week after the first week of matches last season.
Rivas started off the successful weekend for the Matadors by scoring the first goal in an eventual 3-0 triumph over Sacramento State last Friday. In the 23rd minute, he received a pass inside the 18-yard box and shot low to beat the Hornet goalkeeper.
On Sunday afternoon in a rematch of the 2012 Big West Conference Tournament Final, Rivas' goal in the 82nd minute put the game away and gave CSUN a 2-0 victory. Steven Manios stole the ball from a UC Davis defender and centered a pass to Rivas in the box before the Los Angeles native touched it to his left foot and powered the ball past the goalkeeper.
Two of the three shots that Rivas took on the weekend found the back of the net as the Matadors became just the third team in the Big West since 2001 to start the season with 10 wins in 11 matches. For his career, Rivas now has 16 goals, six assists and 38 points.
