Northridge Downs California, 1-0, in Exhibition Match
Aug. 23, 2008
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
Editor's Note: Upon reviewing film of the Cal-CSUN game, #16 junior Moy Gomez should have received credit for the game-winning goal against Cal on Aug. 23. Cal State Northridge athletics apologizes for any confusion.
Junior Moy Gomez scored what would have been the fourth goal of his Northridge career as the Cal State Northridge men's soccer team defeated California, 1-0, in an exhibition match Saturday. Gomez took a cross from junior Sunghyun Kim and beat the Golden Bear goalkeeper to his right. Junior Milan Radovic also picked up an assist on the tally.
Gomez put the game winner away in the 103rd minute of the game, becoming the second Matador in as many days to give Northridge a win in the final moments. Senior Nalena Betancourt pushed the women's team past San Diego State on Friday in the 106th minute of action.
Senior Kevin Guppy, the school's all-time leader in wins and shutouts, started in net and posted yet another shutout, though this one does not count in the record books. He made six saves in the contest even with Northridge outshooting California, 15-12. A transfer, junior Cameron Sims, led the Matadors with five shots.
Northridge picked up four yellow cards in the game. Sophomore Jeremy Hohn was the first to be booked, seeing the yellow card at the seven-minute mark. Then sophomore Rafael Garcia also received a yellow, his coming in the 17th minute. CSUN added one final yellow card in the first half, this one going down in the book to junior Robert Pate. Finally, junior Dylan Riley saw yellow in the 76th minute.
The Matadors open the 2008 season on Aug. 29 with a match against Big East challenger Georgetown, with the two squads meeting at Matador Soccer Field at 4:30 p.m. The Hoyas and CSUN have never met on the soccer pitch.
