Sept. 1, 2009
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - For the first two-thirds of the game, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (0-1-0) and University of San Diego Toreros (1-0-0) battled one another in an effort to light up the scoreboard first. Unfortunately for CSUN, the host team was able to accomplish this twice in the latter portion of the contest at the Toreros defeated the Matadors by a score of 2-0 Tuesday evening.
The Toreros broke a scoreless tie in the 73rd minute on a goal scored by midfielder Dan Delgado, and added an insurance goal twelve minutes later to take a 2-0 lead.
Northridge did out-shoot San Diego by a 9-8 margin, unfortunately none of those shots were able to find the back of the net.Sunghyun Kim lead the team with five shots, with Cameron Sims, Robert Pate, and Daniel Yoon each taking their first respective shot of the season.
Also recording both his first shot and shot on goal was freshman Rene Anguiano in his debut game for head coach Terry Davila. Including Anguiano, redshirt-freshman Joe Franco, and freshman midfielder Luis Gil participated in their first game wearing the Matador red and black, with Anguiano and Franco each earning a spot in the starting eleven.
Making his 2009 debut in goal for the Matadors was sophomore Brandon Ibarra who made a number of solid plays to keep his team in the game, finishing the contest with a total of five saves.
CSUN now has the next four days to prepare for their next game against the Loyola Marymount Lions in their 2009 home opener this Sunday at Matador Field. Kick-off is scheduled to take place at 4:30 p.m.
