NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Continuing their season-long eight-game road trip as one of four participants in the University of Akron Tournament, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (0-4-1) battled the host Akron Zips (4-0), but were defeated by last year's College Cup runners-up by a score of 3-0 Friday night.

The Matadors will now face the University of Illinois-Chicago Sunday morning before flying back to California. Live Stats and a free internet stream of the game will be available at GoMatadors.com, kick-off is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. local (Northridge) time.

Fired-up and ready to face the consensus #1-ranked team in the nation, CSUN was snakebitten early in the match when a shot from Perry Kitchen from nine yards out was deflected and snuck inside the back post in the fifth minute of the match.

With a majority of the game still left to play, CSUN refused to let the unfortunate events derail their plan of attack. But Akron refused to enable CSUN to find that equalizing shot as they doubled their advantage in the 28th minute to take a 2-0 lead.

A header off a free kick in the 43rd minute stretched the Zips lead to three goals just before halftime.

Five different Matadors were able to take a shot in the second half, blasts by midfielder Thomas Ramos and forward Mattias Bonvehi turned out to be the only two shots on goal for CSUN as Akron was able to silence the Matador offense to earn their ninth consecutive shutout.

In addition to Jake Troy, both Joe Franco and Jeremy Hohn saw action in all 90 minutes of the game as 20 different players participated in Friday's game. Forward Sam Ball made his first start in a Northridge uniform, picking up one of CSUN's five shots.

Franco, midfielder Rene Anguiano, Ramos and Bonvehi each finished the match with one shot apiece.
