SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Traveling to Santa Barbara for their only meeting of the season against the #18-ranked Gauchos, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (2-11-2, 1-5-1 BWC) were unable to erase an early-game deficit and were defeated by a final score of 4-0 Saturday evening.
CSUN will now return home to face the UCLA Bruins at Matador Soccer Field on Wednesday evening before resuming Big West competition against the UC Riverside Highlanders this upcoming Saturday evening.
Known for their ultra-competitive match-ups against one another, CSUN faced an uphill battle early in the match as the Gauchos were able to convert on their first three shots taken to jump out to an early advantage.
From that point on, midfielders Carlos Benavides and Gustavo Villalobos were able to create the shooting lanes needed to record their respective shots on goal in an attempt to whittle away at the Gaucho advantage before halftime.
Both Benavides and Villalobos finished with a team-high two shots on goal.
In the second half, UCSB added an insurance goal in the 58th minute to stretch their lead to 4-0, numbers that would eventually end up as the final score of the game.
In the 68th minute, Jeremy Hohn was able to record his only shot of the game when his attempt just sailed right of the Gaucho goal; teammate Alberto Rosas created a scoring opportunity of his own in the 78th minute as his shot also sailed just wide from its intended target.
