Big West Conference men's soccer coaches have predicted a fourth-place finish for the Matadors in 2008 according to the results of the coaches' preseason poll, the Big West Conference announced Monday. The Matadors received 26 points in the poll and will open their season on Aug. 29 as part of the Northridge Tournament when they host Georgetown at 4:30 p.m.

Under the direction of head coach Terry Davila, now in his 10th season at the helm of the program, the Matadors return a very experienced team for the 2008 campaign. CSUN welcomes back nine returning starters and 16 letterwinners from a 2007 squad that finished 7-7-6.

Highlighting the Matadors' roster for 2008 is senior goalkeeper Kevin Guppy, the school's career leader in shutouts (21.5) and wins (29). Guppy has earned all-league recognition in all three of his seasons with Northridge and is poised to add to his records in 2008.

The team also features two additional all-league standouts from 2007. Junior Sunghyun Kim, who stands at 10 goals and five assists for his career, and sophomore Rafael Garcia, who had two goals and two assists, both will be counted upon to pace the Matador attack.

Davila also has tremendous experience returning on the defensive backline in the form of senior Bo Miller, juniors Chad Borak and Robert Pate and sophomores Nicholas Hamilton and Jeremy Hohn. Between the group, the unit features 163 career appearances and 92 career starts.

2008 also marks the final year for senior forward Devin Deldó, who enters his final season at Northridge seven career goals and nine career assists. Sophomore Camilo Rojas also returns to the Matadors in 2008 after posting a four-goal, one-assist campaign in 2007.

Northridge opens its 2008 season on Aug. 29 with a 4:30 p.m. match against Georgetown as part of the Northridge Tournament. The event will also feature Cal State Fullerton and Alabama A&M, who will start the tournament at 2 p.m. on Aug. 29. Two days later, Northridge faces Alabama A&M at 2:30 p.m. after Fullerton and Georgetown duel at noon. All games will be played at Matador Soccer Field.
