NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
Cal State Northridge forward Cameron Sims was officially named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week Monday morning, less than a day after his team became co-champions of the Matador Invitational soccer tournament.
"I'm very excited to be named Player of the Week. Both my teammates and I worked hard this past weekend, and I am honored to receive the recognition from the voting members within the conference." stated Sims.
The senior from Ontario, California scored game-winning goals in both games the Matadors competed in last week as CSUN defeated Fairleigh-Dickinson 2-0 and officially won their second tournament in as many seasons with a come-from-behind effort to defeat Milwaukee 2-1.
Sims took a total of ten shots during tournament action, with six of them on goal. With his effort last weekend, Sims now leads his team in scoring with two goals, and is second in both shots (16) and shots on goal (9) taken trailing teammate Sunghyun Kim by a slight margin in each respective category. Both he and Kim lead the team with four total points apiece.
In 2008, Sims competed in 14 games and finished the season with five goals, 11 points, 41 shots, and 18 shots-on-goal. Two of the five goals scored last season were game-winners, an feat Sims has been able to replicate after only four games played this season.
