NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Day one of the decathlon and heptathlon competition at the Northridge Invitational is complete as 21 men competed in two sections of the decathlon and 27 women competed in two sections of the heptathlon.
Competing on a day that saw temperatures reach 90 degrees, unusual for the San Fernando Valley in March, the Matadors Derrick Harris scored a day one decathlon total of 3,403 points while Taylor Cudequest scored 3,176. Kevin Finley is also competing for the CSUN men.
Harris scored a day one event best of 789 points after running 11.33 in the 100 meters.
In the heptathlon, Cal State Northridge also had three competitors as Stephanie Hicks scored a team-best 2,902 points on day one while Jealinda Mills scored 2,675 and Jordan DuFault posted 2,448 points.
Hicks ran the second-fastest time of the day in the 100 meter hurdles clocking a time of 14.42 to earn 920 points. Mills ran 26.45 in the 200 meters to earn her highest point total of the day (758). DuFault won her section of the shot put after tossing a best of 36-9.75 (11.22) which gave her 610 points, her best of the day.
The second and final day of the both the decathlon and heptathlon is Friday with the main portion of the 2013 Northridge Invitational set for Saturday.
