LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge men's track and field team posted several season-bests and one Big West qualifier at the Tommie "Tiny" Lister Classic Saturday at Cal State Los Angeles.
The Matador throwers enjoyed a successful afternoon as Derek Cooper won both the shot put and discus while Alex Butler won the hammer. Cooper threw 57-2.75 (17.44) in the shot and 166-3 (50.68) in the discus while Butler tossed a best of 173-4 (52.84) to win the hammer.
James Poet notched a season-best in the shot put with a mark of 43-9 (13.33) and Robert Mestas surpassed his career-best in the javelin with a toss of 180-1 (54.90) to finish just behind teammate Lance Gonzales (190-11).
On the track, the Matador distance runners fared well as Hunter Hays finished first in the 3,000 meters and was second in the 1,500. Hays ran personal-bests in both races, clocking a time of 3:59.34 in the 1,500 to narrowly miss the Big West qualifying standard. He also ran 8:51.37 in the 3,000 meters finishing just ahead of Juan Olea who also ran a personal-best of 9:03.76. Marvin Gonzales was fourth in a PR time of 9:23.76. Gustavo Hernandez also ran a career-best 3:59.73 in the 1,500 meters to finish third behind Hays.
A pair of Matadors, Steven Gonzales and Marvin Gonzales both ran career-bests in the 800 meters as Steven Gonzales' time of 1:55.81 was a PR but just missed the conference qualifying standard. Marvin Gonzales ran a career-best 1:59.92 to finish 12th.
In the hurdle races, Robert Robinson finished fifth in the 110 meters after running 14.34 while Lance Gonzales was sixth in a personal-best 14.65. Owen Morse was seventh in a season-best 14.90. In the 400 meters, David Perez was fourth in a season-best 57.99.
Cal State Northridge has two more meets (UC Irvine and Occidental) before the Big West Championships will be held at the Matador Track & Field Complex on May 14-15.
