Solid Results For Matadors in Northridge Invitational Muliti-Events

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women had a solid first multi-event competition of the outdoor season as senior Desirae Gonder finished first with 5,250 points while teammate Olympia Jewett was fourth with 4,369 points Thursday and Friday at the Northridge Invitational Multi-Events.

Gonder, who came in with a career-best of 5,512 points, won the 100 meter hurdles and high jump, the first two events on Thursday. She ran a season-best 14.71 in the hurdles then cleared a season-best height of 5-9.75 (1.77) in the high jump. Gonder had 1,821 points heading into the final two events of the day.

She then finished seventh in the shot put with a best throw of 30-9.75 (9.39) before posting the top time in the 200 meters (24.97). Gonder scored a total of 3,201 points on Thursday to take a 319 point lead into Friday's final three events.

On Friday, she opened the day with the top mark in the long jump at 18-8.75 (5.71) which was good for 762 points. Gonder then finished second in the javelin with a top throw of 101-0 (30.78) and won the 800 meters in 2:22.05.

"Desirae had an outstanding meet," said Associate Director of Track & Field Avery Anderson. "Opening with one of the top marks in the country this early in the season shows why she is one of the best heptathletes in the nation."

Jewett, a freshman from Inglewood, Calif., amassed 4,369 points of which 2,773 came in Thursday's four events. Jewett finished ninth in the 100 meter hurdles (15.82) before taking third in the high jump (5-2.50). She then threw 35-2 in the shot put and ran a season-best 26.71 in the 200 meters to finish sixth.

On Friday, Jewett posted a best of 16-4.50 in the long jump, threw of best of 90-1 (27.46) in the javelin before wrapping up the competition by running 2:36.85 in the 800 meters.

Sophomore Jenna Hulion also competed for the Matadors, finishing 10th with 3,491 points. Hulion's top performances came in the 200 meters where she ran 27.98 and the 800 where she posted a time of 2:37.00.

The men's decathlon competition is due to be completed later on Friday afternoon.
