EUGENE, Ore. - Cal State Northridge junior Desirae Gonder scored 3,067 points on the opening day of the seven-event heptathlon and is 19th place heading into day two on Thursday at the NCAA Championships at Oregon's Hayward Field.

Gonder, who came into the championship with a career-best point total of 5,512, needs 2,446 points over the final three events on Thursday to establish a new career-best in the two-day event.

On Wednesday, she finished 21st in the opening event, the 100 meter hurdles to pick up 907 points, her best of the day. Gonder ran a time of 14.51 which is well of her season and career-best of 14.07. She then moved on to arguably her best event, the high jump, and finished tied for seventh with a best clearance of 5-6.50 (1.69). Gonder had three chances at 5-7.75 but missed on all three attempts but still earned a solid 842 points.

Also on Wednesday, the Matador men's 4x100 relay team was disqualified in the preliminary round for passing the baton out of the zone.
