Matador Men's Volleyball Opens Fall Camp

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge men's volleyball opened its fall training camp on Monday, Oct. 10. A roster of 25 players entered camp as the Matadors prepare for the first of two fall tournaments this weekend at USC. The four-week camp wraps up in November at the UCLA SAC Tournament.

With several impact newcomers competing with the five returning starters from 2011, many of the positions in the 2012 starting lineup will be hotly contested battles in the fall.

With a largely inexperienced lineup, the Matadors finished 7-22 overall (5-17 MPSF) last season but look to regain their foothold among the elite teams in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2012.

After switching to outside hitter towards the middle of last season, senior Matt Stork returns to spearhead the Matador offense. Stork, a two-time All-MPSF setter in 2009 and 2010, had 189 kills (1.99) playing a little over half the season at outside hitter. Stork and sophomore outside hitter Brandon Lebrock accounted for 362 kills a season ago.

Sophomore Greg Faulker, a 2011 MPSF All-Freshman Team selection, will again team up with junior Drew Staker to form a solid middle blocking duo. Senior setter Danny Rodrick, who took over when Stork was moved to the outside, averaged 6.47 assists per game last season.

Northridge welcomes in a host of newcomers this fall as several impact players look to make their presence felt. Julius Hoefer, a 6-8 opposite comes to the Matadors by way of Steingaden, Germany while 6-7 setter Filip Tomicic is a transfer from Cal Baptist.

Head coach Jeff Campbell, who enters his 15th season at the helm of the men's program, will get his first look at the team this weekend (Oct. 14-15) as the Matadors will play six matches at the USC Fall Tournament at the Galen Center Pavilion. Northridge will wrap up its fall camp at the UCLA SAC Tournament the weekend of Nov. 11-12.
