Matadors Win Two of Three Matches at UCLA SAC Tournament

Cal State Northridge men's volleyball wrapped up the fall preseason schedule by winning two of its three matches at the UCLA SAC Tournament last weekend (Nov. 11-12). The Matadors opened with straight-set wins over UC Santa Barbara and USC before falling to the host Bruins in their final match on Saturday.

Northridge opened Friday's competition with a 25-20, 27-25, 25-15 victory over UC Santa Barbara. Freshman Julius Hoefer (Steingaden, Germany) paced the Matadors with 19 kills while hitting .560. Senior Matt Stork added 16 kills (.261) and served a match-high five aces including key aces in the first and second sets. Northridge also got 12 kills (.444) from sophomore Brandon Lebrock in the win.

The Matadors then played two matches on Saturday, sending their second team to play against USC. In the 25-21, 26-24, 25-21 win, sophomores Cory Wagner (.393) and Greg Faulkner (.480) each had a team-high eight kills while redshirt freshman Kyle Stevenson added six kills (.318). Faulkner also had a pair of aces while Lebrock came in as a server and posted three more aces for the Matadors.

In afternoon match, UCLA swept Northridge 25-17, 25-15, 28-26 despite a match-high 16 kills (.393) and three aces from Hoefer. Stork contributed nine kills and a pair of aces but hit just .130. Drew Staker and Marty Lorenz combined for eight kills from the middle.

"The tournament went very well," said head coach Jeff Campbell. "Overall I'm very pleased with where we're at, we didn't finish quiet a strong as I might have liked but we played very well against Santa Barbara and USC. We're still a very young team but we're much better than we were at this point last year."
