HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. - Cal State Northridge men's volleyball players Kyle Stevenson and Alex Jones went undefeated in five matches as the duo teamed up to win the 2012 USA Volleyball Beach High Performance Championships (Beach HPC) on Thursday, July 19.
In the men's under-21 division, Stevenson (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) and Jones (Sunnyvale, Calif.) won the gold medal, defeating Kevin Villela (Phoenix) and Weston Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) in the final, 21-18, 21-11. Chris Long (Long Beach, Calif.) and Robbie Page (Rochester, N.Y.) won the bronze medal, defeating Parker Kalmbach (Coto De Caza, Calif.) and Vaun Lennon (Westchester, Calif.) in the third-place match, 20-22, 21-16, 16-14.
The team of Stevenson-Jones dropped just one set during the two-day tournament while winning all five matches.
Stevenson recently competed his first season as an outside hitter for the Matadors after redshirting in 2011. He averaged 1.33 kills per game in 15 matches last season and will look to become a fixture on the outside in 2013.
Jones, a setter, also redshirted the 2011 season for Cal State Northridge before spending 2012 at Los Angeles Pierce College. He is scheduled to be back with the Matadors in 2013.
Teams competing in the Beach HPC will be representing USA Beach National Teams, USA Beach High Performance Teams, or affiliated USAV Regions. Region High Performance teams scheduled to participate are: Florida, Aloha, Intermountain, Chesapeake, Arizona, Lakeshore, Iowa, and Southern California.
The USAV Beach HPC is taking place on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier, adjacent to the Jose Cuervo Hermosa Beach Open, which will be on the north side.
