Cal State Northridge opens the 2013 season with the exact same preseason ranking the Matadors opened 2102, 12th. The big difference is this season, Northridge is coming off a 12-18 season which earned the Matadors a berth in the postseason whereas the 2012 CSUN squad was coming off a 7-22 campaign and no postseason. The Matadors earned 59 points in the inaugural AVCA Coaches Top-15 poll (Dec. 28). Northridge has now been ranked in 172 of the last 184 weekly polls dating back to 2002. The Matadors last were unranked for a period of 12 weeks (Feb. 7-May 2) during the 2011 season. UC Irvine was the unanimous top-ranked team in the preseason poll as the Anteaters earned all 16 first-place votes and 240 total points. BYU is second this week followed by Stanford, Pepperdine and Lewis. UCLA is sixth in the preseason followed by Long Beach State, Penn State, USC and Loyola-Chicago. This preseason top-15 is filled out by Ohio State, the Matadors, UC Santa Barbara, George Mason and Cal Baptist.

The Alberta Golden Bears are 19-2 as they are in the homestretch of their 2012-13 season. Alberta currently leads the Canada West Universities Athletic Association with a perfect 12-0 record. The Golden Bears will play at UCLA (Jan. 2) and at Pepperdine (Jan. 5) around matches against the Matadors and USC at the Galen Center. British Columbia-Okanagan, currently 2-17, is in its second full season of Canadian Interuniversity Sport competition, the highest level of post-secondary athletics in the country. In its debut last season, the Heat made the Canada West playoffs.

Having become Cal State Northridge men's volleyball's all-time winningest coach during the 2010 season, Jeff Campbell picked up the latest milestone win of his 16-year Matador career in Northridge's 3-0 win at UC San Diego on Feb. 24, 2012. The victory gave the Matador boss his 225th career victory. Campbell, who now has a career record of 232-207 (.528), reached the 150 and 200 career wins over the last four seasons and now sets his sights on his 250th career win. Currently, the third-longest tenured head coach at Cal State Northridge (men's golf coach Jim Bracken is in his 26th season & men's basketball head coach Bobby Braswell is in his 16th season) Campbell has posted double figure win totals in 14 of his 16 seasons on the bench and notched a career-best 24 wins in 2009.
