Pair of Matador Seniors Named to 2013 All-MPSF Men's Volleyball Team

2013 All-MPSF Men's Volleyball Team

Cal State Northridge seniors John Baker and Drew Staker were both named to the 2013 All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Men's Volleyball Team Thursday with Baker earning second team honors and Staker named honorable mention.

The postseason honors are the first career accolades for both players. Cal State Northridge has now had multiple players named to the All-MSPF Team in 11 of the last 12 seasons.

"I'm very happy for both John and Drew," said head coach Jeff Campbell. "John has worked so hard during his career here. He was a team leader this year and his work ethic all season was great so it's nice for him to get that recognition at the end of the year. Drew worked equally hard his entire career and since both guys are seniors it's great to see them both get recognized."

Baker led the Matadors in kills virtually the entire 2013 season while Staker will go down as one of the top blockers in CSUN history.

Baker, an opposite hitter from Racine, Wis., led CSUN and finished 11th in the conference averaging a career-high 3.57 kills per game. He struck for double figures in kills 19 times during his senior season and also led the Matadors in digs with a career-high 152. His best match of the season came against No. 5 Pepperdine on Feb. 8 when Baker pounded a career-high 24 kills while hitting .327 in a career-high 52 attacks.

Staker, a middle blocker from Las Vegas, Nev., was the Matadors' leading blocker this season and ranked in the top-10 in the MPSF at 1.11 bpg. He also ranked at or near the top of the conference in hitting percentage a good portion of the season. With 112 total blocks in 2013, Staker moved into the top-10 in Cal State Northridge history with 301 total blocks (10th) and ranks eighth in career block assists with 264.

Cal State Northridge finished the season with an 11-15 overall record (9-15 MPSF) and came within one win of reaching the postseason for the 11th time in the last 12 years.
