SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Drew Staker and Tanner Nua combined for 28 kills as Cal State Northridge defeated UC San Diego 29-31, 25-23, 25-23, 25-18 Friday night to advance to the Consolation Championship of the UCSB Gaucho Invitational.
The Matadors (1-1), who lost to 10th-ranked UC Santa Barbara earlier on Friday to drop into the Consolation bracket, had to overcome a tough UC San Diego team who CSUN has now beaten 37 consecutive times dating back to 1988. The Matadors will take on second-ranked UC Irvine (1-1) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Staker, a sophomore middle blocker, knocked down a career-high 15 kills in 17 swings with just one error to hit .824. After a tough match against UCSB, Nua came back with 13 kills in 27 swings to hit .333. The senior also had five digs, five blocks and one ace. Northridge also got nine kills apiece from Brandon Lebrock (.136) and Dillon Auxier (.185) while Lebrock added a match-high three aces and six digs.
Matador setter Matt Stork narrowly missed a double-double with 46 assists and a team-high nine digs. After hitting .114 against UCSB, CSUN rebounded to hit .330 (55-19-109) against the Tritons.
UC San Diego was led by Shane Veiga who posted a match-high 19 kills (.250) while Calvin Ross added 10 kills while hitting .474.
