NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Sophomore Tanner Nua pounded a match-high 16 kills and junior Kevin McKniff added 10 as Cal State Northridge defeated Red Deer College of Canada, 30-13, 30-15, 30-20, 30-23 in an exhibition collegiate men's volleyball match Tuesday night at The Matadome.
As a team the Matadors hit a solid .444 (62-18-99) while the Kings were limited to a .000 (22-22-70) hitting clip. Northridge also served very well as the Matadors piled up 21 aces as a team to just a pair for Red Deer College.
Nua, who also served a match-high seven aces, hit .520 on his way to his match-high 16 kills committing just three hitting errors in 25 swings. McKniff, who added six aces, also hit well as he posted a .467 hitting clip while senior Eric Vance recorded six kills in seven attacks without an error to go with two aces in just over one game of action. Junior Mike Gaudino added nine kills (.158) while junior Jacek Ratajczak chipped in eight kills while hitting a match-high .778.
The Kings were led by Kyle Baird who came off the bench to post 10 kills (.438) while Chris Wowchuk chipped in five kills (-.300).
Cal State Northridge, ranked fifth in the Bison/AVCA Preseason Poll, opens the 2009 season on Jan. 9 as the Matadors take part in the UCSB/Elephant Bar Invitational at The Thunderdome. Northridge, seeded fourth in the eight-team tournament, opens against fifth-seeded UCLA on Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. The Matadors will then take on either top-seeded UC Santa Barbara or eighth-seeded Pacific at 7 p.m.
