IRVINE, Calif. - Hunter Hays and Araceli Zainos led their respective Matador cross country teams Saturday at the season-opening adidas/UC Irvine Invitational. Hays finished 14th for the CSUN men while Zainos was 38th in the 5k women's race.
Hays was the lone Matador runner to finish in the top-20 as he placed 14th among 229 runners in a time of 25:56.9 in the men's 8k. Also for the Northridge men, Julio Mora finished 166th in 28:56.5, Martin Santillan finished 171st in 29:03.1, Marcelo Rosales finished 182nd in 29:30.0, Ezekial Glass finished 211th in 31:44.2 and Eddie Garcia finished 218th in 32:59.1.
As a team, the Matador men finished 15th with 460 total points and an average time of 29:02.14.
Zainos paced the CSUN women with a 38th-place finish (out of 168 runners) as she ran a time of 18:52.9 in the 5k. Yvonne Castillo-Urbina was 50th in 19:10.2, Alexis Pichardo was 66th in 19:27.9, Fany Alvarado was 76th in 19:35.4, Kaitlin Janes was 101st in 20:05.2, Vanessa Carr was 131st in 20:54.4, Kendahl Waalk was 141st in 21:17.2 and Annalise Lopez was 143rd in 21:22.9.
The Matador women finished 12th as a team with 284 points and an average time of 19:26.32.
John Gilbertson of The Master's College was the individual champion of the men's race in 24:41.4.
Cal State San Marcos won the meet with 56 points, UC San Diego was second with 82 and Central Arizona third with 90 points.
Arkansas' Semehar Tesfaye won the women's race in 17:21.1 as the 11th-ranked Razorbacks claimed the top six spots and eight of the top 10 in winning the meet with 15 points.
