SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal State Northridge finished eighth in both the women's 6k and the men's 8k at the 2013 Big West Conference Cross Country Championships Saturday at Fairbanks Memorial Course.
In the women's 6k, the Matadors finished with 244 points and were led by Megan Magdaleno's 38th place finish.
Magdaleno ran a team-best 24:13.4 followed by Alexis Pichardo (24:52.8) in 53rd, Victoria Olaiz (25:34.7) in 60th, Rachael Duriez (25:43.0) in 62nd, Annie Weiss (26:32.8) in 65th, Nicole Rietveld (26:43.4) in 67th and Kristen Tapia (27:27.2) in 70th place.
"The women stepped up and ran really well as a team," said Matador head coach Avery Anderson. "Megan had a her best race of the year, Alexis ran a gutsy race and performed well. Both Victoria and Rachael came back from injuries and really stepped up. Overall it was a good team effort on a really tough course."
In the men's 8k championship, Jackson Higgins was CSUN's top finisher as he wound up 55th in a time of 28:45.0. As a team, the Matadors tallied 253 points and ran an average time of 29:24.56.
"As a competitor you obviously want to place better but we know we're rebuilding," added Anderson. "So the test for the men's team was to see how our youth was going to compete in the pressure of this great conference championship. Our top two finishers are freshman and are next two are sophomores so while the day was rough the future is very promising."
