VAN NUYS, Calif. - Junior Lilyana Morejon finished in second place in the women's 5k as the Cal State Northridge women finished fourth as did the Matador men on Friday at the Northridge Invitational at the Balboa Park/Sepulveda Basin course.
In Northridge's first cross country meet in 22 years, the heat index which topped out the high 90's, forced both men's and women's races to be shortended to 5,000 meters. Both races went off without a hitch as Danielle Domenichelli, competing unattached pulled away from Morejon over the final loop to win the women's race in a time of 17:12.96. Morejon, who ran in the lead pack the entire race, finished second in 17:24.62 and Zsofia Erdelyi of USC was third in 17:45.03.
Also for the Matadors, Zitalic Ley was 15th in 18:42.22, Nanci Velarde was 31st in 19:27.93, Mallory Day was 44th in 19:52.43, Marissa Crook was 49th in 19:52.99, Ana Rosales was 63rd in 20:57.11 and Ariana Gomez was 71st in 21:50.16.
AS a team, Northridge was fourth with 121 points and an average time of 19:04.04. Cal State Fullerton won the women's team title with 53 points, followed by USC (61) and Westmont College (120).
UC Riverside's Chad Hall won the men's race in a time of 14:58.06, easily outdistancing teammate Emmanuel Ngula who was second in a time of 15:09.70. Another UCR runner, Steven Crum was third in 15:19.93.
Juan Olea paced the Matador men with a 24th place finish and a 16:02.55 time. Gustavo Hernandez was a spot back in 25th place in 16:04.53, Hunter Hays was 27th in 16:11.56, Juan Hernandez was 50th in 17:01.44, Danny Garcia was 52nd in 17:04.13, Masis Hagobian was 56th in 17:15.98 and Steven Gonazales was 58th in 17:22.88.
As a team, the Matadors were fourth behind UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton and Westmont.
