Cal State Northridge sophomore guard Ashlee Guay has been named the Big West Conference's Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. In the Matadors' season-opening victory over Portland, Guay led all scorers with 20 points and set a new career high with nine field goals.
Trailing 33-29 at the half, Guay and her CSUN teammates put together a complete performance in the second half to pull away from the Pilots. In all, CSUN out-scored Portland 41-18 and Guay scored 11 of her 20 points in the half.
In all, Guay finished 9-of-16 from the field and 2-of-6 from 3-point range. She added three rebounds, six assists and three steals while playing 36 minutes in the victory over the Pilots. She and the Matadors held Portland to 30 percent shooting (18-of-60) from the field and forced 26 Pilot turnovers.
Before the season, Guay was named to the Preseason All-Big West Conference Team. In her freshman season, Guay led all conference players in assists (129) and steals (91) and averaged 8.6 points for the season. She scored a career-high 23 points in a win over Cal Poly last season.
Guay and the Matadors play twice in the upcoming week. CSUN hosts Eastern Washington on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in The Matadome before traveling to Tucson, Ariz., to face Arizona on Saturday at 1 p.m.
