Matadors Drop 66-55 Decision to UC Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (13-14, 7-8 Big West) lost 66-55 to UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at The Thunderdome in a Big West Conference contest. Haley White scored a team-high 17 points, but a sluggish first half sent CSUN to its 13th-straight loss against the Gauchos.
Having defeated UCSB only once since 1984, the Matadors needed a strong start Saturday. Unfortunately, that was far from the case.
The Gauchos jumped out to a 8-0 lead to start the game and cruised to a 34-14 halftime lead. As a team, the Matadors shot 6-of-26 (23.1 percent) from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
Northridge amped up its intensity in the second half, but it was too late. The Matadors cut the lead to as few as 10 but could not get any closer. CSUN shot an even 50 percent in the second half.
White came off the bench to finish 6-of-11 from the floor. She tied a career high with four 3-pointers and addded five rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
Violet Alama posted 14 points and five rebounds in 37 minutes for CSUN.
For the Gauchos, Sweets Underwood became the fourth different opponent to record 20+ rebounds against CSUN this season. She finished with 19 points and 20 boards in 30 minutes of action.
The Matadors return to action on Saturday, Mar. 2 with a road contest at Hawai'i. After the trip to the Islands, the Matadors close out the regular season with home games against Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside.
