Matadors Fall 92-73 to Sacramento State in Season Opener
SACRAMENTO, Calif. ---
Sacramento State hit a school-record 17 3-pointers to hand the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-1) a 92-73 loss in both team's season opener Friday evening. Junior Cinnamon Lister finished with a team-high 15 points and Camille Mahlknecht added 13 for the Matadors in defeat.
Things could not have started any better for CSUN Friday at The Nest. The Matadors jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first six minutes of the game.
However, the Hornets fought back and went on a 21-5 run to take the lead. Northridge battled to close the gap to two points (38-36), but Sacramento State ended the half on a 13-0 run over the final two minutes of the half to take a 53-38 lead at halftime.
Sacramento State's Hallie Gennett was lethal in the first half, the first game of her collegiate career. She knocked down six 3-pointers and had 20 points at the break. She finished with a game-high 26 points.
The second half saw CSUN score the first seven points of the frame to cut the lead to eight. That would be as close as the Matadors would get as the Hornets continued to bomb 3-pointers from all over the court. In all, Sacramento State shot 17-of-42 (40.5 percent) from beyond the arc Friday.
In her first game as a Matador, Lister posted 15 points on 7-of-22 shooting. She added a team-high seven assists, four rebounds and two steals in 36 minutes. Mahlknecht overcame early foul trouble to finish with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Ashlee Guay finished with eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in 29 minutes. Northridge was 4-of-16 from 3-point range and 30-of-81 (37 percent) from the field. Sacramento State finished the contest shooting 38.6 percent (32-of-83) from the field and forced 27 Matador turnovers.
Northridge will have to recoup quickly as the team heads to Bozeman, Montana to face another former Big Sky rival, Montana State. Tip off on Sunday, Nov. 10 between the Matadors and Bobcats is slated for 1 p.m. (MT) // Noon (PT).
