Matadors Fall to Eastern Washington 73-53
CHENEY, Wash. ---
A 22-4 run midway through the first half gave Eastern Washington all the cushion it would need as the Eagles defeated the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (2-7) 73-53 Friday evening in a non-conference contest at Reese Court. After jumping out to an early 8-2 lead, nothing went the Matadors way as they were outscored 71-45 the rest of the way en route to their fifth-straight defeat.
The first half started well for CSUN. Janae Sharpe scored the first four points of the game, Cinnamon Lister knocked down a 3-pointer and Bernadette Fong hit a free throw to give CSUN an early six-point advantage.
However, Eastern Washington was undeterred and reeled off a 22-4 run to take a 24-12 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. CSUN fought back and cut the lead to 30-25 at one point, but EWU went on a 9-2 run to close the half and lead 39-27. Janae Sharpe had seven points and Ashlee Guay and Mikayla Thielges each had six.
The lead grew to as many as 24 with 10:17 left in the contest. CSUN managed to cut the lead down to 16 (66-50) but that would be as close as they got.
Ashlee Guay led the Matadors in scoring with 16 points. She was 6-of-14 from the field and had three rebounds and four assists. Jasmine Johnson finished with a career-high 10 points and added six rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench.
Mikayla Thielges was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field to finish with eight points. She also had eight rebounds. Janae Sharpe had nine points and five rebounds.
The Matadors shot 33.9 percent (21-of-62) from the field and 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from 3-point range. Eastern Washington, opening a month-long homestand, shot 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the field 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line.
Laura Hughes, who had missed the previous two games, led Eastern Washington with 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
The Matadors will look to right the ship and snap their five-game losing streak on Tuesday, Dec. 10 with a contest against USC. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m. from The Matadome.
