UC Davis Defeats Northridge, 86-66, in Sunday Matinee

DAVIS, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (3-12, 0-2 BWC) lost 86-66 Sunday afternoon to UC Davis (5-7, 1-0 BWC). Senor Ashley Blake led four Matadors in double-figures, scoring 19 points while adding three rebounds, three assists and two steals to her final stat line.
After failing to score against Pacific on Jan. 2, Blake was 8-of-18 from the field and also hit three 3-pointers to giver her 66 for her career, the sixth-most in school history. She is now averaging 8.5 points-per-game, which represents a new career high.
Sophomore Analee Viena-Lota came off the bench to add 12 points for Northridge on 6-of-11 shooting from the field. She also had five rebounds and an assist in the contest and is now averaging 7.0 points and a team-high 5.3 rebounds per game.
Both Whitney Ligon and Katrina Thompson finished with 11 points in the contest. Ligon knocked down two 3-pointers and tied a season high with three assists. The 11 points represents a new season high for Thompson, who also added seven rebounds and three steals in the contest.
Northridge trailed by three at halftime, 36-33, despite falling behind by as many as 11 in the stanza. Both Thompson and Blake had nine points each at the break.
However, the second half saw CSUN fall behind early, committing two fouls in the half's first 28 seconds. Northridge trailed by as many as 25 points in the second half before closing late to draw it back to a 20-point defeat.
The Matadors shot an even 45 percent from the field (27-of-60) compared to 48.3 percent for the Aggies (28-of-58). Page Mintun led UC Davis with 25 points and also had 10 rebounds.
Northridge wound up with 26 turnovers in the game as UC Davis finished with 19 steals. The Aggies did cough the ball up 22 times, resulting in 21 points for the Matadors. However, UC Davis held a sizeable advantage in the paint, outscoring Northridge 34-18.
The Matadors have a 10-day layoff before their next contest, a Jan. 14 meeting with preseason favorite UC Riverside. The Highlanders visit The Matadome for a 7 p.m. tip off with Dave Caldwell providing play-by-play coverage of the contest on gomatadors.com.
