UC Irvine Squeezes Past Northridge, 48-46

IRVINE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (5-14, 2-4 BWC) lost, 48-46, Saturday afternoon to UC Irvine at the Bren Events Center. Senior Ashley Blake had 19 points in the defeat, including a career-high five 3-pointers, while junior Katrina Thompson posted her third-straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The game was an offensive struggle for both teams. CSUN shot 36.7 percent from the field (18-of-49) while UCI shot jus 35.7 percent from the field (20-of-56). Northridge also ran into foul trouble, as freshman Jasmine Erving fouled out of the game with 3:42 left in the game.

The Matadors held a 43-41 lead with 2:35 left in the game following a lay-up from Thompson, but could not hold on as Irvine outscored CSUN 7-3 at the end of the game.

Blake came out on fire for Northridge in the second half, draining all five of her treys in the period. Her 19 points was one off her career high and she added one steal.

Thompson continued to be a presence in the paint, finishing with her third career double-double. In addition her 15 points and 11 rebounds, she had here assists and a steal in 35 minutes of action.

Senior Tonicia Tademy had two points, six rebounds and five assists for Northridge while Erving finished with five rebounds, four points and four blocks.

CSUN trailed 19-11 at halftime. Junior Katrina Thompson had six points and eight rebounds at the break for Northridge. The Matadors' 11 points matched their lowest total for a half this season.

Kim Barnes scored a season-high 11 points for the Anteaters in the victory, their first against a Big West opponent this season.

Northridge returns to the Matadome on Wednesday, Jan. 28 for a meeting with UC Santa Barbara. Tip-off between the Matadors and Gauchos is slated for 7 p.m.
