SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (3-15, 1-7 BWC) lost 69-55 Saturday afternoon to UC Santa Barbara at The Thunderdome. Bridgette Conejo scored a team-high 17 points and Neeta Sreekanth added a season-high 14 points for the Matadors.
After trailing just 30-26 at halftime, Northridge was hoping for bigger things in the second half. However, the Gauchos scored the first eight points of the half to take a 38-26 lead with 17:08 left to play.
The Matadors would cut that lead to as few as six following a lay-up by Violet Alama with 5:43 left to play. That would be as close as CSUN would get as UCSB closed the game on a 14-6 run.
Conejo finished 6-of-14 from the field and added three 3-pointers and two free throws to finish with 17 points. She also had three rebounds, four assists and two steals for Northridge. She is now averaging a career-high 12.6 points for the season.
Sreekanth played her best game of the season Saturday, coming off the bench to score a season-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. She also tied a season high with her five rebounds and two assists. Katrina Thompson added seven points, a team-high seven rebounds and five assists for the Matadors.
For the game, Northridge shot 37.5 percent from the field (21-of-56) and 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) from 3-point range. UC Santa Barbara finished the game shooting 47.2 percent from the field (25-of-53) and 37.5 percent (3-of-8) from 3-point range.
The Matadors finished with 23 turnovers for the game and were out-rebounded, 38-36, by the Gauchos. Mekia Valentine led the Gauchos with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Northridge returns to the court on Thursday, Feb. 4 with a home game against UC Riverside. Tip-off between the Matadors and Highlanders is slated for 7 p.m.
