UC Irvine Edges Northridge, 57-53

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (5-19, 2-9 BWC) dropped a 57-53 decision to UC Irvine Wednesday night in at The Matadome. Northridge held a 51-46 lead with 4:29 left in the game, but saw the Anteaters finish the game on a 11-2 run to escape with their third league victory of the season.
After trailing for most of the first half, the Matadors closed on a 9-0 run to lead 26-25 at halftime. Senior Tonicia Tademy scored 12 of her 14 points in the frame on 4-of-7 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. She added a game-high seven assists and now has 156 dimes for the season.
In the second half, CSUN led by as many as seven points following a lay-up from Jasmine Erving with 6:26 left in the game. The freshman finished with six points and five rebounds. However, UCI's Rebecca Maessen scored 21 points in the second half, including three 3-pointers, to finish with a game-high 26 points.
Both Katrina Thompson and Analee Viena-Lota finished with 11 points, grabbing six and seven rebounds, respectively. The two also recorded three steals each and combined to go 6-of-9 from the free throw line. Neeta SreeKanth scored all five of her points in the second half for Northridge.
As a team, CSUN shot 31.7 percent from the field and were out-rebounded, 47-33. The Matadors did force 24 UCI turnovers, scoring 23 points and held a 22-18 advantage in the paint.
Northridge wore pink for the game as part of the WBCA's Pink Zone to promote Breast Cancer awareness.
The Matadors return to action Saturday when they host Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m. in The Matadome. Northridge defeated the Titans, 87-82, on Jan. 21. The game will be free to all high school students with a high school I.D.
