Bench Boosts Matadors to 78-67 Victory over Titans

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (6-19, 3-9 BWC) defeated Cal State Fullerton, 78-67, Saturday night at The Matadome. Four Matadors scored in double-figures, led by Whitney Ligon's 19 points and 16 from Neeta Sreekanth, both of whom came off the bench in the contest.
The Matador bench, led by the efforts of Ligon and Sreekanth, outscored Fullerton's reserves, 39-18. Northridge shot a season-high 51.9 percent from the field in the contest and out-rebounded CSUF, 43-35.
Northridge jumped out to a 39-20 lead at halftime behind 12 points from Ashley Blake. The Matadors shot 46.7 percent from the field and drained six 3-pointers in the frame.
In the second half, CSUN stretched its lead to as much as 27 with 13:51 left to play. However, Fullerton would battle back, closing to as close as nine with 27 seconds left following a 3-pointer by Lauren Chow.
However, the Matadors would calmly knock down its free throws in the waning seconds to secure the victory. It is the first time in school history that the Matadors executed a season sweep over Cal State Fullerton.
Ligon finished 5-of-6 from the field and a career-high 9-of-10 from the free throw line. She added two steals and is now averaging a team-high 11.4 points for the season. Sreekanth was 7-of-10 from the field and knocked down two 3-pointers. The 16 points represented a new season best and she added five rebounds and two assists.
Ashley Blake finished with 12 points and Katrina Thompson added 10 points for Northridge. Tonicia Tademy posted her second career double-double, finishing with 10 rebounds and 10 assists and added six points.
Up next for the Matadors is their final road trip of the season, a voyage to the California Central Coast to face Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. First up is a meeting with the Mustangs on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m., followed by a contest against the Gauchos on Feb. 29 at 2 p.m.
