Matadors Stumble against Beavers, 49-32

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-3) fell to Oregon State, 49-32, Saturday evening at the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic. Senior Analee Viena-Lota posted a double-double in defeat, finishing with 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.
Neither team shot the ball effectively in the game. CSUN finished at 25.9 percent (14-of-54) while Oregon State shot 37.5 percent (18-of-48) for the game. Lay-ups plagued the Matadors throughout the contest, as many seemingly easy attempts simply would not fall.
Northridge did come out better to start the second half, scoring the frame's first seven points to cut the Oregon State lead to 24-21. However, the Beavers were able to weather the storm and eventually pulled away midway through the final 20 minutes.
Viena-Lota had 10 defensive rebounds and was 5-of-15 from the field for her seventh career double-double. She added an assist and a steal in 35 minutes of action. Before fouling out, Violet Alama finished with eight points and nine rebounds and added two blocks and a steal.
Amanda Thomson was the only other Matador to score more than three points, finishing with six on 3-of-8 shooting. She added two assists and a steal in 27 minutes. Haley White had a game-high five assists in 36 minutes.
Alexis Bostick led the Beavers with 10 points. Both El Sara Greer and Alyssa Martin had nine points in the victory for OSU.
Northridge did win the rebounding battle, finishing with 40 boards compared to 38 for Oregon State. CSUN had 17 turnovers compared to 14 for Oregon State and both teams finished with 20 points in the paint.
The Matadors trailed 24-14 at halftime after shooting 22.2 percent (6-of-27) from the field. The Matadors actually held an 8-7 lead midway through the opening 20 minutes, but Oregon State closed the frame on a 17-6 run. Alama had four points and seven rebounds for CSUN.
The Matadors close out their time in Hawai'i with a game Sunday afternoon against Eastern Michigan. Tip off is slated for 3 p.m. (HT) / 5 p.m. (PT) from the Stan Sheriff Center.
Next week, CSUN hosts the Woodland Hills Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Basketball Classic 2010 at The Matadome. Northridge welcomes Wichita State, Wyoming and Tennessee-Chattanooga to the San Fernando Valley for a four-game tournament on Nov. 26 and 27.
Both days will start at 5 p.m., with the Lady Mocs and Cowgirls playing first Friday, followed by CSUN and Wichita State. The two winning teams will battle for the tournament title the following day, preceded by a consolation game between the two losing teams from the day before.
