Matadors Fall 74-68 to Chattanooga at Woodland Hills Holiday Inn Classic

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-6) lost 74-68 to Chattanooga Saturday night in the Consolation Game of the Woodland Hills Holiday Inn Basketball Classic 2010. Sophomore Janelle Nomura scored a career-high 24 points, including a 13-of-14 rate from the free throw line, for the Matadors.

The game was close for the entire 40 minutes, with UTC never leading by more than 10. Northridge closed to within 60-58 with 6:15 left in the game. However, Chattanooga would score 10 of the next 12 points to build an insurmountable lead. The Lady Mocs' Whitney Hood had eight of those 10 points for UTC, finishing the game with 27 points and 12 rebounds.

CSUN battled throughout the contest, out-rebounding UTC 39-32 for the game. The Matadors pulled down 15 offensive rebounds and out-scored the Lady Mocs 36-17 in the paint. Jasmine Erving posted her second double-double of the tournament for Northridge, finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds. It was the second-straight game that she tied a career high in rebounding.

Nomura was equally effective for CSUN on offense. She was 5-of-7 from the field, hit a 3-pointer and dished out four assists compared to only one turnover in 35 minutes. Fellow sophomore Violet Alama finished with nine points and 10 rebounds, including six offensive rebounds, for the Matadors.

Another notable performance for CSUN came from freshman Haley White. She had four points and a game-high six assists. She has 26 dimes through her first six collegiate games.

As a team, Northridge shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the field and 88.9 percent (16-of-18) from the charity stripe. Chattanooga finished 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the field and 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from 3-point range.

In addition to Hood, the Lady Mocs' Kylie Lambert was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field, including four 3-pointers, to finish with 21 points. She also was whistled for a technical foul late in the game.

The Matadors remain at home for their next contest, a Nov. 30 meeting with LMU of the West Coast Conference. Tip-off from The Matadome is slated for 7 p.m.
