NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Mario Trutanic has been hired as a women's basketball assistant coach, CSUN head coach Jason Flowers announced. A veteran of high school and college coaching in Southern California, Trutanic joins the Matadors and will work with the team's interior players while handling other administrative responsibilities.
"I look forward to working with Coach Flowers and the rest of the staff," Trutanic said. "I want to help make this program a championship-capable squad every season and increase the perception and brand of Matador basketball throughout the San Fernando Valley and Southern California."
A coaching veteran at several different levels of women's basketball, Trutanic most recently worked as the head coach at Oaks Christian High School. Last season, OCHS set a school record with 25 wins and were a Division IV-A CIF Finalist and quarterfinalist in the state tournament.
Trutanic also spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Santa Monica College, helping the team qualify for the state playoffs in his first season with the squad.
During the 2008-09 season, Trutanic served as the top assistant at Division-II San Francisco State. That year, the club ranked among the top 10 in the nation in field goal percentage defense.
Flowers and Trutanic also spent a season together on the women's basketball staff at Long Beach State. The familiarity between the two has Flowers anticipating a smooth transition.
"We are excited to add Mario to our staff and basketball family," Flowers said. "He'll be able to come in and get to work immediately and help us reach our goals. Mario has a high basketball IQ and has an outstanding work ethic that will benefit everyone associated with our program."
Trutanic began his coaching career as an assistant coach for two years (1999-2001) at Marymount High School in Los Angeles. Marymount went 29-17 in those two years, including a 17-5 mark in 2000-01, a league championship and an appearance in the CIF playoffs.
He has also had coaching stints at Crossroads High School, Saint Bernard's High School and has served as the head coach for the Girls 17 & Under Southern California Swoosh Team.
A 2003 graduate of Antioch University with a degree in Liberal Studies, Trutanic earned his Master's Degree in Sports Management in 2007 from the University of San Francisco, Orange campus. He is also currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Teaching and Education Studies at USC.
Trutanic is engaged to Julie Wendell and the two will exchange vows in August of 2011. The couple resides in Los Angeles County.
