NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball will be participating in the California Coast Cleanup Day on Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to noon. The Matadors will be working on cleaning the areas of the Los Angeles River that flows through Balboa Park.
"I think this is a great opportunity to give back to our community and help preserve something all Californians enjoy," head coach Staci Schulz said. "We are excited to get out there and I believe this will help the team bond and grow as we get ready for the start of the 2009-10 season."
The event is being presented by the California Coastal Commission and features over 70 inland and beach locations for patrons to volunteer at. In 2008, over 12,000 volunteers from Los Angeles County joined together to pick up over 180,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from the beaches and waterways.
This year's event signals the 25th Anniversary of California Cleanup Day. Among corporate sponsors involved in the event include Subaru, The Walt Disney Corporation, Coca-Cola, Whole Foods Market and Honda. Selected sites will have giveaways and other promotions.

Last year, the women's basketball team participated in the National Public Lands Day, helping to plant over 500 trees and clear brush at Angeles National Forest.
The Matadors open their 2009-10 schedule on Nov. 1 with an exhibition contest against Cal Lutheran at The Matadome. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
