Women's Basketball Ventures to Big West Media Day; Picked Seventh by Media
IRVINE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge women's basketball head coach Staci Schulz and senior center Katie Holloway participated Wednesday at the 2007 Big West Media Day. Media from throughout the Big West region came to the event to speak with players and coaches about the prospects for the for upcoming 2007-08 basketball season.

In the poll taken by members of the media, the Matadors were picked seventh, receiving 30 votes from the media. Northridge tied for eighth in the conference with UC Irvine with 17 votes from the conference coaches.

"I enjoy media day because it is an opportunity to get our program the exposure it rightfully deserves," Schulz said. "Anytime you bring together all the coaches and players from the Big West, it means only thing: basketball season is upon us."

Schulz fielded a variety of questions about the 2007-08 Matador squad, most concerning how Northridge will replace the seven departed seniors from a year ago.

"This is a year where we will rely upon our juniors and seniors to set the tone in practice and in games, and so far, they have done a magnificent job," Schulz added.

"Whenever a team deals with the amount of departures that we have had, there is a tendency to be anxious about what to expect. However, I can happily say that I and the rest of the coaching staff have been pleased with how the team has meshed so far in practice. We are a team that is going to play great defense and really bring a toughness to our opponents."

Holloway, the two-time defending Big West Sixth Woman of the Year, was quizzed about a full-time move into the starting line-up, an appointment the Lake Stevens, Wash., native relishes.

"It's exciting to be a part of a team that no one is quite sure what to expect," Holloway said. "I have been pleasantly surprised by how quickly this team has become a strong unit with distinct personalities. We're going to offer our opponents a lot of different looks on the court due to the versatility we have on our roster."
