Second Half Surge Lifts Matadors over The Master's College, 83-80

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Junior Ashley Blake scored 20 points and senior Katie Holloway added 18, including the Matadors' last four points, as the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team defeated The Master's College, 83-80, Tuesday night at The Matadome. Junior Whitney Ligon and freshman Bianca Davies were the other Matadors to reach double figures, scoring 17 and 13 points, respectively.

The Matadors battled back from a 43-35 halftime deficit to tie the game at 77 with 1:37 remaining in the second half. Sophomore Katrina Thompson, who finished with eight points and eight assists, scored on a lay-up with 41 seconds remaining after getting a feed from Blake, who finished with four assists.

The Mustangs answered with a three-pointer from Annie Gillespie to take back the lead at 81-80. Holloway then scored the game's final four points, converting a pair of free throws and a lay-up. Holloway finished with six rebounds and was 10-of-12 from the free throw line.

In addition to her 20 points, Blake chipped in three rebounds and a game-high eight steals. Ligon was key for the Northridge attack in the second half, hitting two 3-pointers and recording two steals in the stanza. Davies provided a nice scoring spark off the bench, hitting 6-of-7 shots and pulling down four rebounds.

At the half, Holloway had 10 points and Blake had nine. Holloway and junior Crystal Hahs, who finished with four points, nine rebounds and two blocks, proved to be too much for The Master's College. Northridge outscored the Mustangs, 42-24, in the paint and converted 26 Mustang turnovers into 28 points.

The Matadors open the 2007-08 season with a pair of road contests, playing at Pepperdine on Friday at 7 p.m. and at The University of San Diego on Sunday at 2 p.m. The game at Pepperdine represents the first time in 11 years that Northridge has not opened its season at home.
