The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-7) hosts San Jose State Sunday afternoon at The Matadome in a non-conference contest. Head Coach Staci Schulz will look to freshman Jasmine Erving for a follow-up performance to her 21 point, 13 rebound game against UCLA to help lead CSUN to its first victory of the season.
The double-double was the first of Erving's career and the third double-figure rebounding performance by a Matador in the 2008-09 season. Erving also leads the Big West Conference with eight blocks and is now averaging 7.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.
Sophomore Analee Viena-Lota continues to lead the Matadors in scoring, averaging 8.7 ppg. However, over the last five contests, senior Whitney Ligon is leading the team with an average of 9.8 ppg. She has hit 34.1 percent of her field goal attempts (15-of-44) and leads the team with a 72,2 percent clip (13-of-18).
A pair of seniors, Tonicia Tademy and Ashley Blake, have both performed well for Northridge in the backcourt. Tademy is leading the league with an average of 4.9 assists per game and she is also averaging 5.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Blake leads the squad with eight 3-pointers on the season and has dished out 20 dimes while averaging 5.4 ppg. She tied a career high with four 3-pointers against Jackson State on No. 26,
CSUN is shooting 34.8 percent from the field and 25.7 from beyond the 3-point arc for the season. Its opponents are hitting at a 44 percent clip from the field and 38.5 percent from 3-point range.
San Jose State returns to The Matadome for the second-straight season on Sunday. The Spartans dropped a 93-49 decision at Kansas on Dec. 3. SJSU shot 27.9 percent from the field in the game with Natalie White leading the team with 10 points.
Their win came in a 49-48 victory Sacramento State on Nov. 28. Natalie White led the team with 15 points, Chasity Shavers scored 13 and Shaunna Ridge had 14 rebounds in the win.
White is the team's leading scorer, averaging 14.2 points per game. She is shooting 35.2 percent from the field for the season and is also averaging 3.7 rebounds per contest. Shavers is the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 7.3 ppg and 3.0 rpg. Ridge is pulling down an average of 6.7 rebounds per contest and has 11 blocks on the year.
Pam DeCosta is in her second season as the head coach at San Jose State. The team finished 3-28 last season, though one of those victories was a 59-55 victory over Northridge on Nov. 30, 2007. The Spartans own a 7-1 record in the all-time series.
Following the game against San Jose State, the Matadors hit the road once again for a game at Fresno State on Dec. 9. The tip off between the Matadors and Bulldogs is slated for 7 p.m.
