Montana Upends Northridge, 87-52
MISSOULA, Mont. --- The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-8) lost to the University of Montana (5-3), 87-52, Saturday night at the Dahlberg Arena in Missoula, Mont. For the third time in four games, junior Whitney Ligon led the Matadors in scoring, finishing with 12 points.
Ligon was 5-of-14 from the field, including 2-of-5 from 3-point land, and added three rebounds to her stat line. Freshman Bianca Davies finished in double figures for the second-straight game recording 10 points on a season high six free throws.
Sophomore Shanice Howard posted a career-high seven rebounds in the game to go along with her two points and three assists. Senior Katie Holloway added nine points and six rebounds in the defeat.
Montana took a 51-21 lead into halftime, the most an opponent had scored in the first half against Northridge. Behind a 2-3 zone defense, the Lady Griz jumped out to a 17-5 lead with 11:23 remaining in the half and closed the half on an 8-1 run.
Northridge did record five steals in the first half in employing a full-court defense after made baskets. Eleven different Matadors saw action in the first half Ligon led the Northridge with seven points at the break and Holloway added four points and four rebounds.
From the field, the Matadors shot 27.6 pct. (15-of-58) while Montana was 34-of-65 from the field (52.3 pct.). The Matadors connected on 16-of-20 attempts from the free throw lines, an 80 percent clip. Northridge also forced 21 Montana turnovers in the game,
Northridge gets the next week off to hit the books for final exams. They return to the floor on Dec. 19 when Cal State Bakersfield ventures to The Matadome. The game, which can be heard on gomatadors.com with Sam Farber detailing all the action, is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip off.
