Bakersfield Squeezes Past Northridge, 69-65
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Despite a season-high 21 points from freshman Analee Viena-Lota, the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-9) lost to Cal State Bakersfield (6-6), 69-65, Wednesday night at The Matadome. Two other Matadors reached double figures, as junior Crystal Hahs finished with a career-high 16 points while junior Whitney Ligon added 11 in the defeat.
After trailing 33-27 at halftime, Northridge came out on fire in the second half, shooting a blistering 53.6 percent in the stanza (15-of-28). The Matadors cut the Roadrunners' lead to two, 67-65, following an old-fashioned three-point play from Viena-Lota with 44 second left.
Bakersfield's Kelley Tarver connected on 1-of-2 free throws with 17 seconds left to give Northridge a chance to send the game into overtime. However, junior Tonicia Tademy's 3-point attempt sailed wide of the basket with six seconds remaining and CSUB's Chris Kepenekian hit a free throw with five seconds remaining to end the comeback bid.
Viena-Lota shot 75 percent from the field for the game (9-of-12) and tied a team high with nine rebounds. Hahs' 16 point effort was the result of 8-of-13 shooting from the field. The junior also grabbed five rebounds and blocked a season-high five shots. Ligon knocked down a season-high six free throws en route to her seventh-straight double-digit scoring performance.
Senior Katie Holloway also played well for the Matadors, finishing with eight points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Katrina Thompson registered new career highs in points (5), field goals (2) and assists (5) and also tied a career high with four rebounds. Junior Ashley Blake added a season-high five assists to her four rebounds and two points.
For the game, Northridge shot a season-best 43.3 pct. from the field. The Matadors also scored 15 points off 16 Roadrunner turnovers.
Naomi Johnson led Cal State Bakersfield with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
