Northridge Falls to Fresno St., 69-58
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Despite 19 points from junior Whitney Ligon, the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-10) lost to Fresno State (5-8), 69-58, Sunday afternoon at The Matadome. Freshman Analee Viena-Lota was the Matadors' other double-digit scorer, finishing with 12 points off the bench.
En route to her game-high 19 points, Ligon set new season highs in field goals (7), 3-point baskets (5) and minutes (36). She has now scored in double figures in eight straight games for the Matadors and is averaging 11 points per game for the season.
Viena-Lota was 6-of-9 from the field and added three rebounds in 25 minutes of action for Northridge. Over her past two games, Viena-Lota is averaging 16.5 points and six rebounds.
Senior Katie Holloway added a game-high 11 rebounds, one off her season high, and eight points in the game. Sophomore Shanice Howard, who returned from a one-game absence, finished with four points and five assists in the game. Junior Crystal Hahs added three more blocks to her league-leading total of 22.
Northridge shot 42.4 pct. from the field (25-of-59) compared to a 41.9 pct. clip (26-of-62) for Fresno State. The Bulldogs won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding Northridge, 45-27. The Matadors also forced 19 Fresno St. turnovers, converting those miscues into 13 points.
Northridge returns to The Matadome Thursday when it opens Big West Conference play against Cal Poly. The game is the third of a season-long four game homestand and will tip off at 7 p.m. Northridge will also host perennial rival UC Santa Barbara on Saturday in a contest slated for a 4 pm. tip off.
