Clariss Guce Opens Competition at U.S. Women's Amateur Pub Links Chamionship

NORMAN, Oklahoma - Cal State Northridge junior Clariss Guce opened competition Monday at the U.S. Women's Pub Links Championship.

At the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, Guce (Artesia, Calif.) carded an opening round 76 and with most of the players still on the course she is currently tied for 77th-place.

The first two round feature stroke play and Monday Guce had two birdies, 11 pars, four bogeys and one double bogey. After two rounds of stroke play, the players will be seeded into a match-play format.

Results of the U.S. Women's Pub Links Championship can be found here.

UPDATE (June 19): Guce carded rounds of 76-74 in stroke play to finish in a tie for 41st at six-over par 150. She made the cut (nine-over) and advanced  to match play where she will take on Kelsey Vines (San Antonio, Texas) beginning at 11:57 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

Match play is a competition played by holes rather than total strokes for the round. In USGA amateur Championships, two opponents play against each other and while there may be other players on the course, each group is its own match and has nothing to do with the rest of the field. The winners of each match keep advancing until there is only one player left. With 64 players, this occurs after 6 matches.

UPDATE (June 20): Guce was defeated by Vines 6 & 4 in Match Play. Vines advanced to the round of 32 with the win.
