Matadors Seventh After Two Rounds of Long Beach State Gold Rush

Feb. 14, 2011

YORBA LINDA, Calif. - Cal State Northridge posted team rounds of 320 and 317 and is in seventh place at 638 following the first two rounds of The Gold Rush by Golfsmith tournament at Yorba Linda Country Club. Sophomore Clariss Guce is within striking distance of the lead with one round to play.

The Matadors, who were still hanging around the top-five in the team race midway through the second round, had a tough time finishing up posting a team score of 321 after an opening round 317. CSUN's second round score matches the high team round of the 2010-11 season.

"This course is not easy, you really have to stay on your toes," said head coach Bonnie Murphy. "I think we got tired and kind of lost focus coming in at the end of the second round but with a good nights sleep I think we can rally tomorrow."

San Diego State leads the team chase with a two-round score of 615. Host Long Beach State is second at 618 followed by Portland State (627), Gonzaga (633) and New Mexico State (635). San Francisco (637) is sixth and the Matadors (638) are seventh in the 12-team field.

Individually, Guce is tied for eighth at (+10) 154 following rounds of 74-80. Guce, playing just her second tournament of the 2010-11 season, is just seven shots behind leader Simone Huey of Long Beach State who is at (+3) 147. She began play in the second round in third place but slipped to eighth following her second round 80.

"Clariss finished great in the first round but struggled a little bit in the second round," said Murphy. "I'm really optimistic that if anyone can come back and play well tomorrow she can."

Fellow sophomore Margo Dionisio is also in the top-20 as she is tied for 15th following rounds of 78-79. Dionisio, who has a pair of top-20 finishes already this season, sits at (+13) 157 heading into Tuesday's final round.

Northridge's leading scorer, Kylie Kimura is 26th following rounds of 81-80 which left her at (+17) 161. Ashlee Nagamine and Maurissa Medina rounded out the Matador scoring as Nagamine is tied for 50th at (+22) 166 while Medina is tied for 53rd after carding a pair of 84's for a two-round (+24) 168.

Northridge's final group will tee-off at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning for the tournament's final 18 holes.
