March 21, 2011

IRVINE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge men, led by Chris Russo's seventh-place finish, are third while the Matador women's team is sixth after the first day of the Folino Invitational at Oak Creek G.C.

The CSUN men are third in the 54-hole tournament following rounds of 294-292. The Matadors (586) trail host Cal State Fullerton (580) by six shots and Cal Poly (583) by three in the 10-team field.

"We're just not finishing our rounds as a team," said head coach Jim Bracken. "We're playing our last few holes over par as a team and as soon as we can get over that hump we'll be in contention to win some tournaments."

Russo is in position for his first collegiate win as he sits one shot back of a group of six golfers who share the lead after two rounds. Russo is currently tied with Dakota Duerr of Cal State Fullerton at one over-par 142 after he posted rounds of 71-72 on Monday.

"Chris is only one shot back and he bogeyed his last two holes and still shot 72," said Bracken.

Matt Siporin is also in the top-10 after two rounds as he carded rounds of 74-71 to sit in a tie for ninth at three over-par 145. Siporin was tied for 21st after his opening round 74 but his second round of even-par 71 moved him into a tie for ninth.

Elsewhere, senior Nick Delio is tied for 26th at eight over-par 150 following back-to-back rounds of 75. Freshman Jake Katz is also tied for 26th after posting rounds of 76-74 and Satch Herrmann is tied for 33rd at (+11) 153 after rounds of 74-79.

"We're looking forward to good round tomorrow and we'll see if we can't win our first tournament," added Bracken.

In the women's competition on Monday, the Matadors completed 18 holes at 328 and trail team-leading Portland State by 25 shots. Long Beach State (306) is second, UC Irvine (310) is third, Cal Poly (314) is fourth and Cal State Fullerton (318) is fifth in the eight-team field.

Junior Lady Samson, playing as an individual, is the only CSUN golfer among the top-20 as she is tied for ninth with an opening round five over-par 77. Margo Dionsio and Kylie Kimura are both just out of the top-20 as the duo is tied for 21st with an opening round nine over-par 81.

Also for Northridge, Ellen Krausse is tied for 25th at (+10) 82, Clariss Guce is 33rd at (+12) 84 and Jennel Alexander is tied for 41st at (+17) 89.

Both teams will play a final round of 18 holes on Tuesday.
