RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. - Cal State Northridge opened the first round of the Big West Championship with a 318 and is sixth-place with two rounds yet to be played. Individually, Clariss Guce and Lady Samson are both in the top-20 after one round.
UC Davis carded a team score of 291 and has a one-stroke lead over Long Beach State heading into Monday's second round. The Matadors (318) are eight shots behind fifth-place UC Riverside (310) and 18 shots back of fourth-place Cal Poly (300).
Guce had CSUN's best round of the day on Sunday as she posted a (+6) 78 to tie for 16th-place. Guce, who had one birdie and 11 pars on Sunday, was two over-par on the back nine and four over-par on the front. She is currently 12 strokes behind leader Alice Kim of UC Davis who tied the course record with a six under-par 66.
Samson, who has been CSUN's steadiest player over the last few weeks, finished Sunday one shot behind Guce with a (+7) 79. Samson did not record a single birdie on Sunday but did have 11 pars.
Sophomore Margo Dionisio is in 25th-place after an opening round of (+8) 80, Ashlee Nagamine is tied for 26th at (+9) 81 and the Matadors leading scorer Kylie Kimura struggled to an opening round (+12) 84 and is tied for 32nd-place.
