April 19, 2011

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. - Cal State Northridge women's golf posted a final round 308 to finish sixth for the second time in the last three conference championships Tuesday at Tijeras Creek G.C. Senior Ashlee Nagamine was the top Matador finisher in 15th-place.

Alice Kim of UC Davis was the individual champion while her Aggie teammates also celebrated the team title. Kim (207) finished five shots better than Long Beach State's Monica Villarreal (212) while UC Davis repeated as team champions by 18 shots over Long Beach State.

Northridge's three-round score of 926 is the best by a Matador team at Tijeras Creek since CSUN won the conference championship with a three-round 925 in 2004. The Big West Championship has been contested at Tijeras Creek five times since 2004.

Nagamine finished up her collegiate career with two of her best rounds of the season as she followed up a one over-par 73 on Monday with a final round of two over-par 74. Nagamine overcame an opening round (+9) 81 to finish in the top-15 at (+12) 228. Nagamine, who finished a career-best 12th at the 2008-09 conference championship, matched her 15th-place finish from her freshman season in 2007-08. Nagamine led the Matadors with eight birdies over three rounds and had four birdies on Tuesday to match teammate Kylie Kimura.

With 6,094 strokes over 77 rounds in her four-year Northridge career, Nagamine ranks third in Matador women's golf history with a 79.14 stroke average.

Sophomore Clariss Guce, who led the Matadors for the first two rounds, finished with a final round (+7) 79 on Tuesday to finish just outside the top-20. Guce, who finished tied for 20th as a freshman at last season's championship, posted rounds of 78-74-79 to finish tied for 21st at (+15) 231.

Junior Kylie Kimura, competing in her first Big West Championship, also overcame a difficult opening round to put together solid rounds Monday and Tuesday. The Matadors' leading scorer this season, opened with a season-high 84 on Sunday but rebounded to shoot (+5) 77 on Monday and two over-par 74 on Tuesday to finish 25th at (+19) 235.

Junior Lady Samson, who became one of CSUN's better players over the final two tournaments of the Spring, finished tied for 26th at (+20) 236 following rounds of 79-76-81. Sophomore Margo Dionisio, an honorable mention All-Big West selection as a freshman in 2009-10, finished tied for 30th at (+25) 241 after posting rounds of 80-78-83.
